Comfort + Style

Genuinely excited to see this new style of dressing around town and on fashion blogs (like Because I’m Addicted) of  cottony layers + lots of jewelry.

The result is feeling deliciously comfortable and very very stylish.

And practical: I can wear the same thing to the dance studio, to work, and to go out for a drink in the evening time.

Human Nature

Very excited to see this exhibit with lots of acquisitions of modern and contemporary art, according to statements by the council, at LACMA.

The exhibit “Human Nature,” including Bruce Nauman’s colorful neon sign pictured above, is on now through July 4, 2011.

Check out an awesome series of pictures of the installment of the work on LACMA’s blog: http://lacma.wordpress.com/2011/03/10/installing-nauman/

Perfume, something we love to hate.

We are proud to announce that we are now selling some of our favorite fragrances in Christopher Brosius’ line of unconventional scents.  After being fascinated by science as a child and then going on to study art and architecture at Parsons, Brosius eventually settled into his own perfumerie in Brooklyn.

Interested in the sense of smell for its incredible ability to stir up old memories, he distilled hundreds and hundreds of natural smells (air, ocean, fire, tea) into essential oils and has combined the essential scents into fragrance combinations that are designed to be reminiscent of very specific life experiences, and therefore nostalgic.

For Brosius perfume is a framework for remembering and observing one’s life.

We are currently selling “In the Library,” “Russian Caravan Tea,” “Walking in the Air,” “Fire from Heaven,” and “On the Beach 1966,” so come check them out.

Here is his enchanting website if you are interested in delving deeper: http://www.cbihateperfume.com/.

Bye for now!

Do you know about this virtual wish list called Svpply? It’s kind of a blog meets social media meets online shopping format to organize items you like (and desire) coupled with discovering new items. Ever since a friend of mine introduced me to it, I’ve been crazy about it and more than…

LOVE FOR LOVE

Came across this expose on the home of brilliant jewelry designer Pamela Love & her musician boyfriend Jordan Sullivan on home design blog The Selby.  Her color palate and mixing of textures and patterns is inspiring.  She uses art as objects and objects as art, and she has chosen such an eclectic mix things from different cultures and combined them to create a completely cohesive aesthetic.

It is like Love and Sullivan had a vision in their mind of how their own little world would look and then gathered seemingly disparate objects to make it a reality.

At Paper or Plastik we have a similar fondness of the multi-purpose approach, of connecting and combining seemingly disparate objects and pursuits to create a more interesting, unified whole (i.e. crafts, performance, and cafe culture culture).

It is always comforting to know there are kindred spirits out there, looking to add strange ingredients together and create something new.  It is nice to be reminded that we are simultaneously unique in our individual artistic desires and also part of some kind of like-minded global tribe.

Happy Thursday from Paper or Plastik Cafe!
