Customer Show & Tell: Who We Serve

I knew three things about David Koll before he let me sit him down and pick his brain: he loved movies, worked in movies, and disliked my Hall & Oates Pandora station. However, a pour-over’s time to chat about the latest movie David saw or I saw, or what he was writing or what I was writing, was never enough time to suffice my interest in the mild-mannered screenwriter, so off the clock, I once again ate my lunch and talked.
A LA transplant, David grew up in Maryland and earned his degree in Film, emphasizing in screenwriting from the University of Michigan. Living in Los Angeles, is never an easy feat especially when as a transplant (one not originally from the city), it takes time to settle and find your niche in the town, even more so in the Industry. However, David quickly got a bite for his first written feature. Bustling through meetings, his deal unfortunately fell through. Receiving rejection is of course – well, it sucks. Yet, we all persevere, learn from our Ego’s humiliations and keep writing.
From one writer to another, I asked David his process in screenwriting (never written in the genre I was very curious to compare notes). “I write commercialized versions of my own interest, fears, and thoughts. “ When he began writing at Michigan his scripts were “small personal matters.” David explained that in growing up he realized that as a screenwriter he needed to compromise what matter to him and what matter to everyone else. That’s the thing about movies, it’s truly a group activity from production to the final premiere, and the biggest group involved is the masses of audiences across the world that pay to experience it with you: the screenwriter. It’s one helluva story time.
David is a quiet, intelligent man who watches Casablanca three to four times a year just because he loves it so. Top Gun ain’t so bad either. For David’s characters, they begin as archetypes; adding his own details to create a defining texture: “the more details you get the more flaws come out” he quips. “Realizations are as important as the vehicle to the realizations.” I chew on David’s thought for a bit while peeling my fourth tangerine. “I like that,” I respond.
We, at Paper or Plastik, like David. We give him a big Facebook thumbs up. As he begins to work on his third draft of his current dark sci-fi thriller feature, we wish him the best because we’ll take half the credit if he ever wins an Oscar. Remember the people who caffeinate you, David. We expect our bonus within twenty-four hours. Coffee on the house for everyone! But in all seriousness, the potential success of our customers, even as small as the triumph of a good morning’s work done, like in David’s world at PoP, we consider ourselves honored to be a part of his creative space.
He likes us. He really likes us.

Going to the movies,
Andrea
